🇹🇭Thailand
Warm, affordable, with a long-established retiree visa
Thailand has hosted Western retirees for decades. Chiang Mai offers cool mountain air and a low cost of living; Bangkok offers world-class hospitals; the islands offer the beach life. The Retirement (O-A/O-X) visa is well-worn and straightforward for those over 50.
Residency & visas
The Non-Immigrant O-A 'Retirement' visa is open to those 50+ with proof of income or a Thai bank deposit (commonly 800,000 baht) and required health insurance. The 10-year O-X and the new Long-Term Resident (LTR) visa suit wealthier retirees.
Healthcare
Excellent private hospitals in Bangkok (Bumrungrad, Bangkok Hospital) and Chiang Mai — internationally accredited, English-speaking, and a global medical-tourism leader at low cost.
Your U.S. benefits & taxes
Social Security pays into Thailand. Medicare does not apply abroad; the retirement visa now requires private health insurance. Thailand has begun taxing some remitted foreign income — get current local tax advice.
Climate
Tropical — hot most of the year with a rainy/monsoon season. Chiang Mai is cooler and drier (but has a smoky 'burning season' Feb–Apr).
Safety & stability
Generally safe for expats with normal precautions. Periodic political turbulence rarely affects daily life; traffic is the bigger everyday risk.
Welcome, community & culture
Large, established expat retiree community (especially Chiang Mai). Famously friendly 'Land of Smiles' culture; smaller Black community, and experiences vary — most report a warm welcome.
Getting back to family
Bangkok (BKK) is a major hub with one-stop service to the U.S. via Asia/Middle East. Long flights home are the main downside.
