About

Retirement advice that finally says the quiet part.

Most "best places to retire" lists stop at sunshine and a cost-of-living number. They rarely mention whether a state's laws will protect you, whether you'll find community and culture, or whether the local hospitals take health equity seriously.

Roots & Routes is built for everyone — and built with intention for Black retirees. We weigh real affordability (how pensions, 401(k)s, and Social Security are actually taxed), climate and disaster risk, airport access so you can reach the grandkids, healthcare quality, civil-rights protections, and the strength of Black community and culture.

Then we go further than where. Our guides walk through how: calculating what you truly need, staying under the income limits that quietly shrink your benefits, choosing between COBRA and the ACA, retiring early, negotiating your exit, and building side income that doesn't cost you benefits.

Our methodology

How we score places — and where the numbers come from

Every U.S. city is rated 0–100 on six factors: affordability (cost of living plus how retirement income is actually taxed), climate and disaster risk, airport access for reaching family, healthcare quality, safety & civil-rights protections, and the strength of Black community & culture. When you pick priorities in the Find a Place tool, those factors are weighted more heavily and every city is re-ranked instantly.

Scores combine hard data — Census demographics, median home prices and rents, state tax rules, and hospital-quality measures — with careful editorial review of community, culture, and legal protections that raw numbers miss. The nationwide Every State guide and international profiles are built the same way, from primary sources.

We show our sources and a "last reviewed" date on every data page so you can check the facts yourself. We don't take advertising from any place, builder, or community — the rankings reflect the data and our judgment, nothing else.

Data last reviewed: June 2026. Tax, visa, and price figures change yearly — always confirm the current year before acting.
