Asia's best value for retirees — English-speaking and welcoming

$1,500/ mo budget

Malaysia is consistently rated the top retirement destination in Asia for value. English is everywhere, healthcare is excellent and cheap, Penang and Kuala Lumpur are world-class food cities, and the MM2H visa is built for retirees. A multicultural, Muslim-majority democracy that's used to welcoming outsiders.

Residency & visas

The Malaysia My Second Home (MM2H) program is a renewable long-stay visa for retirees with proof of income and savings. Tiers and thresholds were raised and revised in 2024 — check current requirements, and note the cheaper, lighter 'Sarawak-MM2H' option in East Malaysia.

Healthcare

Among the best-value healthcare in the world — JCI-accredited private hospitals in Penang and KL with U.S./UK-trained, English-speaking doctors. A major medical-tourism destination; out-of-pocket costs are a fraction of U.S. prices.

Your U.S. benefits & taxes

Social Security is payable to U.S. citizens in Malaysia. Medicare does not cover you abroad — but private insurance and cash care are inexpensive. Malaysia generally does not tax foreign-sourced retirement income; confirm with a tax advisor.

Climate

Tropical — hot and humid year-round with frequent rain. No hurricanes or earthquakes; some monsoon flooding regionally.

Safety & stability

Stable and generally safe; normal urban precautions in KL. A moderate, multicultural society, though it is a Muslim-majority country with conservative norms in some states.

Welcome, community & culture

Diverse by design (Malay, Chinese, Indian, and a large expat mix). English is universal, which makes daily life easy for Americans. Smaller Black community, but expats report a warm, curious welcome.

Getting back to family

Kuala Lumpur (KUL) connects to the U.S. via Asian and Middle Eastern hubs (one stop). It's a long haul home — the main trade-off of Asia.
